Connect 3.6.1 not initiating on Linux

Issue

The Aspera Connect browser plugin version 3.6.1 will not initiate on a Linux system.

In the Connect log file you may also see error messages like the following:

~user/.aspera/connect/var/log

2015-09-10 16:06:15 [55c0-147e1760] LOG ERROR: HttpServer Check found another server running. Setting isRunning to
true.
2015-09-10 16:06:15 [55c0-147e1760] LOG INFO: Another Connect process is running. Quitting.

One likely cause of this is the misplacement or absence of the utility lsof. In order for Connect 3.6.1 to run on Linux systems, lsof must be located at the following path:

/usr/bin/lsof

Environment

  • Product: Connect browser plugin
  • Version: 3.6.1
  • Operating System: Linux

Solution

Upgrade to Connect 3.6.5 or later, which removes the dependency on lsof. You may download the latest version at the Aspera downloads site.

Workaround

If you are not able to upgrade to the latest version of Connect, you can also employ the following workaround.

Check whether you have lsof with the following command:

which lsof

If the default location /usr/sbin is returned, you can create a symbolic link from this location to the required /usr/bin path. This can be done with the following commands:

# cd /usr/bin
# ln /usr/sbin/lsof lsof

If lsof is not found, you will need to install it:

Fedora, CentOS and RHEL
# yum install lsof

Debian or Ubuntu
# sudo apt-get install lsof
