Korea’s Arirang TV Selects Aspera for Digital File Transport

September 8, 2011 Aspera Connect Server Powers Global Digital Workflow That Delivers and Manages Mission-Critical Media Assets to Broadcasters in 188 Countries
EMERYVILLE, Calif.—September 8, 2011Aspera Inc., creators of next-generation software technologies that move the world’s digital assets at maximum speed regardless of file size, transfer distance or network conditions, and Arirang TV today announced that the Aspera Connect Server has been deployed worldwide to transfer and manage mission-critical media assets. Founded in 1996, Arirang TV is an international network based in Seoul and operated by The Korea International Broadcasting Foundation. The network presents a diverse range of programs including cultural features, documentaries, language programs, and other segments designed to give viewers a contemporary and accurate look at Korea, Asia and the world at large via satellite 24 hours a day in 188 countries. Broadcasting three channels, Arirang World, Arirang Korea and Arirang Arab, the network reaches nearly 90 million households and offers subtitles in languages including Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Vietnamese and Indonesian.

As demand for digital media evolved, Arirang needed to develop a new network-based file transfer and management system that could keep pace with new business processes and digital workflows. The new system had to be capable of simultaneously delivering mission-critical events in real time to worldwide broadcasters, with efficient and high-speed transfer performance, configurable bandwidth sharing policies and the ability to monitor and control target transfer ratios, automatic resume, as well as built-in security and firewall protection. After conducting careful market research and product evaluation, Arirang selected Aspera’s file transport technology, which is built upon its patented fasp™ (fast and secure) transfer protocol that was designed to meet the speed, management, and security elements Arirang sought.

“We needed to develop a complete and complex system on a tight schedule and limited budget, and with Aspera’s flexible architecture and extensive tools we were able to meet our timeline,” stated Broadcasting Computer System specialist Heon Jun, Lee. “With Aspera, our network has become a true content distribution system, with sophisticated capabilities that have allowed us to rapidly provide over 2,000 video clips from a single event to more than 50 broadcasters worldwide including those in the U.S., Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Brazil, Hungary, Romania, Australia, New Zealand, all on the basis of a powerful platform from Aspera.”

“Aspera is a great choice for an organization like Arirang TV with the need to quickly and reliably transfer content to hundreds of partners around the world,” said John Wastcoat, vice president at Aspera. “They are a great example of a television network that utilizes all that Aspera software offers to develop a complete end-to-end system from guaranteed file transfer to business-critical management and reporting.”
