Shares website won’t load after upgrading to 1.9.3

Issue

The Shares website doesn’t load in the browser after upgrading your Shares installation to version 1.9.3.

The most likely cause of this problem is that your system does not support IPv6. The Nginx web server in Shares 1.9.3 is configured to listen on IPv6 ports in addition to the standard IPv4 ports.

If your operating system does not support IPv6, Nginx will be unable to start, and Shares will fail to load for your users.

Solution

The fix to this problem is to disable Nginx from listening on IPv6 ports.

1. Open the following file in a text editor:

  • /opt/aspera/shares/etc/nginx/nginx.conf

2. Look for the section that configures Nginx to listen on port 80:

server {
listen 80;
listen [::]:80;

return 301 https://$host$request_uri;

Comment out the directive to listen on the IPv6 port, listen [::]:80; by adding a # symbol in front:

server {
listen 80;
# listen [::]:80;

return 301 https://$host$request_uri;

3. Look for the section that configures Nginx to listen on port 443:

server {
listen 443;
listen [::]:443;

return 301 https://$host$request_uri;

Comment out the directive to listen on the IPv6 port, listen [::]:443; by adding a # symbol in front:

server {
listen 80;
# listen [::]:443;

return 301 https://$host$request_uri;

4. Save the file. You should now be able to load your Shares website successfully.
